Chelsea head coach Maurizio Sarri has revealed that he was grateful for the reaction of the Napoli supporters following his move to London.
Speaking to Il Mattino, as reported by Calciomercato, Sarri explained that he bumped into a small group of Napoli fans following Chelsea’s 3-2 home victory against Arsenal and was took back by their response.
I always liked it when they called me the ‘Commander’ in Naples, as it made me feel like a representative of the city. It also weighed on me, because I knew what the people of Naples wanted from me.
I was able to have a walk in London after the Arsenal game, but then I ran into a bunch of Napoli supporters and they wouldn’t let me move a step! It was very pleasing, as it meant they haven’t forgotten me.
Sarri’s departure from Napoli was complicated and somewhat controversial, with the Partenopei hiring Carlo Ancelotti before officially announcing the Chelsea boss’ departure.
The two clubs were locked in negotiations throughout the summer as the Blues looked to replace former head coach Antonio Conte.
The Italian enjoyed a close relationship with the Napoli supporters during his time there, but there were fears that could be jeopardised for the manner in which he left the club.
