David de Gea 6 – Had to wait until the 91st minute to make his first proper save – an impressive dive to his left to divert a close range header. Will be pleased with his first clean sheet of the campaign.
Antonio Valencia 6 – Kept things impressively tight on the right hand side. Displayed good energy going forward in the first half but still does not look 100 per cent.
Chris Smalling 7 – A notably improved performance after Tottenham Hotspur: commanded the box, used the ball well, positioned himself cleverly, and helped Lindelof.
Victor Lindelof 6 – Looked far more comfortable playing alongside Smalling, with whom he maintained a solid backline that kept Burnley’s physical approach at bay. Impressive in possession.
Luke Shaw 8 – Another textbook left-back performance, playing a key role in the lead-up to both goals with commanding runs down the channel. Tidy on the ball, resolute in containing Aaron Lennon, and improving every week.
Nemanja Matic 6 – A quietly competent, steady display from the Serbian. Ensured United kept control in the middle and recycled the ball nicely.
Marouane Fellaini 6 – Many questioned his inclusion at the expense of Fred but his physical presence was an effective buffer against Burnley’s direct approach.
Paul Pogba 6.5 – Drove United’s play forward as usual, displaying his usual eloquence on the ball, and by normal standards was superb. But he will feel frustrated at lacking cutting edge in the final third – most notably with a missed penalty.
Jesse Lingard 7 – The Englishman’s movement was superb all game, dragging Burnley players away to create space for others. Linked up play superbly and never stopped running through the lines. Jose Mourinho will be happy.
Alexis Sanchez 7 – An extremely tidy, energetic display. Picked up good positions in between the lines, linking up well with Lingard, and supplied an excellent cross for Lukaku’s opener.
Romelu Lukaku 7 – A game of two halves for the Belgian: deadly in the box in the first, nodding home the opener and lashing home a second from close range, only to miss two excellent one-on-one chances in the second. But make no mistake: this was a proper striker’s performance from start to finish.
Substitutes
Marcus Rashford 5 – Came on and injected pace on the left hand side, won a penalty, and then got himself sent off all in the space of 11 minutes. A strange cameo.
