Romelu Lukaku has hailed Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho and revealed that the Portuguese’s personality behind closed doors is very different to the one on show to the media.
The pressure on Mourinho over the last month has been huge, particularly after the Reds began the season ith two losses in the opening three games, making it their worst start to a Premier League season since 1992.
However, Lukaku scored twice to help ease the pressure on his manager. The result could have been far more emphatic, and Man United were down to ten men by the end of the game due to a sending off for substitute Marcus Rashford.
The Belgian striker took his tally for the season up to three and made a point of praising his boss.
“He’s (Mourinho) totally different behind the scenes,” Lukaku told beIN Sports. “He’s a really good guy. We trained a lot with the u23s. We were really prepared. We showed quality in the first half and mentality in the second half.”
Lukaku accepted that the team should have scored more on Sunday afternoon, though. Paul Pogba missed a penalty and Lukaku missed two big chances too.
“It was really big, the last game we started well, we could have scored more today,” he said.
“We knew we had to grind out the result in the second half. We need to be more consistent and deliver more performances like we did today. Now we have to keep winning.”
“We’re Manchester United and we need to dominate games.”
Lukaku is correct on all matters. Mourinho’s team are guilty of not taking games by the scruff of the neck, and are guilty of not being clinical enough on other occasions.
