Player Ratings: Sensational Pogba and Dalot steal the show with brilliant performances

David de Gea 6 – Made a couple of routine stops early on as Young Boys tried their luck from distance, but had very little in the form of real work to do.

Diogo Dalot 7 – A very accomplished debut from the teenager: defended solidly, holding his shape well, and produced runs down the right supporters wouldn’t have seen for some time. Promising.

Chris Smalling 7 – The Englishman is in good form. Stood up strongly against the physical presence of Hoarau and commanded his back line with authority.

Victor Lindelof 6 – Had a couple of nervy moments early on as Young Boys poured forward quickly down the centre but grew nicely into the game.

Luke Shaw 7 – After a quiet first 20 minutes it was back to the same old Shaw, bombing forward with intent – winning a penalty which, looking back, decided the game – and clearing up at the back with minimal problems.

Nemanja Matic 7 – This was another quietly excellent performance from the midfielder. Mopped up in midfield and moved the ball along the plastic surface as if it were a cueball. Very fluid throughout.

Fred 6 – You can tell the Brazilian, playing just his fourth Manchester United game, will need more time to settle in. His passing was not quite quick or precise enough at times as he continues to adapt to his teammates.

Paul Pogba 8 – By far the best player on the pitch. By far. Manoeuvred the ball majestically at close range to set up a fizzing finish into the top corner and give United the lead, added a second from the spot moments later, and created Martial’s goal from a driving run through the middle. A class above.

Marcus Rashford 6 – Displayed a willingness to drive into space and take up good positions but, aside from striking the post in the first half, lacked any real final product.

Anthony Martial 7 – Now this is the Martial we love to see. After an anonymous first half the Frenchman exploded into life after the break, leaving opponents in the dust on numerous occasions, turning and spinning and sprinting forward with the zeal United fans love to see. Scoring his first goal since January will do him a world of good.

Romelu Lukaku 6 – Did not see much of the ball despite United’s dominance throughout, and saw even less in the box. Nonetheless worked hard for his team and help up play nicely.
