David de Gea 7 – The Spaniard would have not liked the rate at which he was having to make saves. Produced two very good stops early on and had to deal with a number of awkward strikes after the break, including one in injury time. Could to little about Joao Moutinho’s wonderful goal.
Antonio Valencia 6 – Begun the game in a typically disciplined way, finding his teammates consistently and supplying good energy going forward, but that impetus faded after half time.
Chris Smalling 5 – Found himself caught flat-footed for Wolves’ goal and, against a more technical attacking approach, did not look comfortable for large parts of the game.
Victor Lindelof 5 – Used the ball pretty well, playing out calmly from the back, but more often than not lacked the right positional sense against a zippy Wolves attack.
Luke Shaw 6 – Most of Wolves’ play came down his side, and there were times where the Englishman could have been tighter, but he was nonetheless United’s best defender.
Marouane Fellaini 6 – Did the job that was asked of him: hung back and served as an extra defender, moved the ball up the pitch when he could, won things in the final third. Could have perhaps taken less time on the ball and spent more time higher up the pitch.
Fred 7 – Scored his first goal for the club in style, striking a low drive into the bottom left hand corner, and produced a wonderful first half performance. Took up good positions and worked the ball really well. Seeing him taken off midway through the second half was strange.
Paul Pogba 6 – Looked very sharp in the first half, supplying a wonderful assist for Fred and dictating play. Kept driving forward after the break but was often too ponderous in possession – most notably in giving the ball away in the lead-up to Wolves’ goal.
Jesse Lingard 5 – Had hardly any impact on the game. Rarely broke forward with the ball and never seemed to be an option in the final third.
Alexis Sanchez 4 – Sometimes you sense a player does not have a goal in him. For Sanchez, it was worse than that. Nine months on from joining United he does not look any closer to connecting with his teammates, or even posing a threat of his own. Really poor.
Romelu Lukaku 5 – Failed to command much presence in the box. Could not really hold up the ball to any useful effect due to the sluggish pace of United’s play. A frustrating afternoon.
