Paul Pogba has told Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho that he wants to leave the club.
The Mail report that Pogba has already informed Man United’s Executive Vice-Chairman Ed Woodward, who is in charge of transfers at Old Trafford, of his desire to leave.
Pogba re-joined United in 2016 for £89 million from Serie A champions Juventus, having left for Italy a couple of years earlier on a free transfer.
The move brought a great deal of excitement and was a statement of intent from United having just appointed Mourinho as manager after a torrid spell under David Moyes and then Louis van Gaal.
Yet Pogba nor Mourinho have not lived up to expectations. The player has been inconsistent, with sparks of brilliance interspersed with shockingly bad displays.
His comments in the media during the summer were also unhelpful as he intermittently flirted with La Liga champions Barcelona before denying that his comments meant anything.
It is no surprise that Pogba wants to leave. Mourinho and he have never appeared to have the best of relationships, and it has reportedly suffered continually over the last few months. Mourinho has just removed Pogba of what was effectively the vice-captaincy at United, with the Frenchman having had the armband on a number of occasions this season, including in a 3-0 win in the UEFA Champions League against Young Boys just last week.
That came after comments at the weekend from Pogba that indicated a distaste for Mourinho’s style of play with United. Pogba said the Reds must “attack, attack, attack” and change what they were doing.
A turbulent time at United is only being heightened by yet another spat between Mourinho and his star player. One of them must go.
