Jose Mourinho warned his Manchester United players of letting Derby County back into the game during half time of his side’s miserable League Cup defeat to the Championship side at Old Trafford.
Juan Mata put Man United ahead with three minutes on the clock and should have scored another, while Romelu Lukaku missed two massive chances to give his side breathing distance.
Just like against Wolverhampton Wanderers over the weekend, Derby took advantage of United’s profligacy with an equaliser. Their late goal was cancelled out by Marouane Fellaini‘s injury time equaliser but Frank Lampard’s side deservedly won on penalties.
Speaking after the game, Mourinho noted that he told his players to be wary of a Derby resurgence at half time.
Mourinho, "We didn't score when we could and we could in the first half, we had good situations to kill it. At half time I repeated the words I did in the last match. I told them we needed to kill the game and we didn't."

To describe that game, or at least what came after half time, is no easy task. In a word: chaos. Sheer chaos.
United visibly shrunk in the second half and, despite Fellaini’s last gasp header, never looked like winning the game. There was no collective control of the situation, no summoning of that extra quality to, not even a period whereby they wrestled back the initiative.
Instead, it was chaos. And that, I’m afraid, falls at the feet of the manager and nobody else.
