Jose Mourinho has confirmed that he has stripped Paul Pogba of what was effectively the vice-captaincy at Manchester United.
Reports ahead of Man United’s League Cup third round fixture against Derby County suggested Pogba would never be named captain of the team again after manager Mourinho had decided it was not the correct position for him.
It came after comments from Pogba at the weekend which appeared to go against Mourinho’s tactics at the club as he told reporters of the need to “attack, attack, attack.”
United lost the game 8-7 on penalties having been fortunate to draw 2-2 in the first place, and a frustrated Mourinho angrily rebuked suggestions that the captaincy decision had caused a falling out between him and midfielder Pogba.
“No, the only truth is that I decided Paul is not the second captain anymore,” Mourinho insisted, when asked if there was any truth in the rumours of an argument between the pair.
“No fallout, just a decision that I can make, I’m the manager and I’ve made the decision.”
While there may be no fall-out between Pogba and Mourinho, there is certainly fall out from the story. It seems Mourinho’s is punishing Pogba either for his performances or for his comments in the media, and if that hasn’t caused a fall out, then Pogba must be a very patient individual.
Knowing Pogba in his three seasons at Old Trafford since re-signing from Juventus in 2016, that seems unlikely.
Pogba was rested for the Derby match, among a number of other regular first teamers. The Pogba-Mourinho battle is one of many issues at United in a turbulent time at the club that Mourinho must sort out fast before he faces the sack.
