Paul Merson believes that Manchester United’s signing of Alexis Sanchez has backfired.
The Chilean joined the Reds in the January transfer window as part of a swap-deal between Man United and Arsenal where Armenian attacking midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan went the other way.
Sanchez has not hit the heights of his Arsenal form since arriving at Old Trafford, having hardy contributed in goals or assists and frequently frustrating United fans with his below-average performances.
Former-Arsenal man Merson thinks United signed Sanchez purely because the forward was available and their local rivals Manchester City were also on the hunt.
“You are keeping out a young talent in Marcus Rashford,” said Merson, speaking on Sky Sports.
“But Rashford did play last week in Europe, and he didn’t really shine. Mourinho then has a case of saying ‘you didn’t really turn it on in that game’.
“It is a problem giving him big wages. I don’t know if Man Utd wanted him. I think it was a case of there’s nobody else around, so we’ll take him so Man City can’t have him and it’s backfired in a way.”
Sanchez’s form has been poor and he’s keeping both Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial out of the team.
United needed a right-winger in both the January transfer window and summer window, but because of the Sanchez signing, a player most comfortable on the left wing or up front, the Reds did not bring anyone in for that position.
So Sanchez is both keeping out Rashford and Martial as well as preventing United from signing someone on the right wing because of his huge wages.
