Frank Lampard has revealed that Jose Mourinho was gracious in defeat as Manchester United were humiliated against Derby County in the League Cup third round.
The Reds crashed out at home in the earliest stage of the tournament for the first time since the 2007/08 season when they were beaten by Coventry City.
Derby beat Man United on penalties after a 2-2 draw, a score line which was unfair given the home side’s poor performance and Derby’s impressive showing. Yet even after scraping to a draw, United failed to score their eighth penalty in the shoot-out. With Phil Jones missing, Lampard’s Derby side went through.
Despite that, Lampard said Mourinho was gracious in defeat.
“He [Mourinho] said what a great performance it was from the team,” Lampard said, in his first managerial job with Derby.
“I appreciate that because it’s not easy in defeat in that last moment.
“I think he actually said that before the penalties, but I appreciate it.
“Jose was very welcoming as a whole. We obviously know each other, and he came and spoke to me before, we spoke during and afterwards. It was an honour for me to go up against him.”
The pair have had a long relationship with Mourinho managing the former-midfielder at Chelsea in two spells at the London club.
It’s unsurprising that Mourinho was congratulatory after the game, therefore, but is still good to hear. Perhaps the mood around United would be better if that Mourinho charm came out in public more.
