Cristiano Ronaldo looks likely to play against Manchester United at Old Trafford on October 23rd despite picking up a red card during Juventus’ 2-0 win over Valencia, according to reports.
The former Man United forward was handed his marching orders in the first half at the Mestalla after he attempted to pick up defender Jeison Murillo by his hair in the box.
It was initially thought that the incident, deemed as violent conduct by the referee, would result in the Portuguese missing back to back games against United.
However, according to the Times‘ Paul Hirst, Ronaldo is unlikely to face any further punishment beyond the automatic one match ban brought by a red card, and will therefore he available to play at Old Trafford next month.
UEFA has the power to extend Ronaldo’s ban if they deem his conduct to be violent. The incident in question, however, hardly entails any malicious intent from the 33-year-old. At worse, he was just being overly invasive and a bit annoying.
Ronaldo missing out on playing United would be good news for Chris Smalling and the rest but, for supporters and the wider world, this is an occasion too tantalising to miss. Old Trafford will no doubt hand him a raucous welcome back.
