Manchester United had €250m offer for Real Madrid star accepted in June - report

Reports in Spain have suggested that Manchester United offered a near world record bid to Real Madrid for forward Gareth Bale in the immediate aftermath of last season’s UEFA Champions League final.

Bale’s importance for Los Blancos is now increased following the summer departure of Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus, after nine incredible years of the Portuguese spearheading the club’s attack.

Zinedine Zidane deciding to resign as manager after a third consecutive Champions League victory also helped Bale’s cause, with the Welshman having been constantly out-of-favour under Zidane.

However, after the final itself, Bale stated that he needed to be playing more often than he was at Real Madrid and admitted he would be considering his future over the summer.

Man United took note and reportedly sent a €250 million bid for Bale to the Santiago Bernabéu in the ensuing days.

Bale coming to Old Trafford is the dream of Executive Vice-Chairman Ed Woodward, who is in charge of transfer dealings at United. That has never been a secret.

However, Bale asked for some time to consider the offer, according to Eduardo Inda, a journalist speaking on OK Diario.

That’s despite him being offered a significant pay rise. Inda claimed that he would be paid €25m a year at United, compared to €14m per year at Real Madrid.

Bale then supposedly told his agent, Jonathan Barnett, that he wanted to reject the offer for the time being because he was aware of rumours that Zidane could leave.

When Ronaldo then left for Juventus, Bale suddenly had no reason to leave the Bernabeu for pastures new.

Whether United’s bid for Bale is true or not, and it seems extraordinary that it would not be reported by anyone else at any time in the last four months, it brings the possibility of him joining the club back into the spotlight. The possibility of such a move now is near nil. Once again, he is one of Real Madrid’s most prized assets.
