Harry Maguire has revealed that he was never close to signing for Manchester United during the summer transfer window.
Reports of a move from Leicester City to Old Trafford were rampant around Maguire in the last few weeks of the window, with a £70 million move supposedly on the cards.
Man United were reportedly willing to pay £50 million for the Englishman, who played it down as only a “little interest”.
The Reds were desperate to bring in a new centre-back before the window closed on August 9th, and didn’t manage to do so. Maguire was one name alongside Toby Alderweireld of Tottenham Hotspur, Diego Godin of Atletico Madrid and others who were closely linked with joining Jose Mourinho’s side.
“No, I don’t think so,” Maguire insisted, when asked if becoming a United player was possible in summer.
“There was a little bit of interest there and then but it was always on my mind when I spoke to the owners, who wanted to keep me at the club and extend my contract, that I wanted to play for this club.
“The last two years have been remarkable for myself.
“I obviously got relegated at Hull and then joined such a great club in Leicester last season.”
Leicester do represent a very good club for most players. Premier League champions just a few years ago, they have a fairly solid position in the league now, although can occasionally be dragged into a temporary relegation battle.
The club have good owners, a large support and Maguire is the undoubted and loved first choice defence.
At United, the pressure would be far greater, the affection far lesser, the chance of being dropped for a single mistake far higher.
But despite all of that, it’s unlikely Maguire was even given a direct choice of joining United. Leicester were resolute in holding out for £70m as Ed Woodward looked to only spend £50m on a player who cost Leicester far less just a year ago.
Maguire could have looked to push for a move, but most players would not have done in his comfortable situation when United’s interest was not certain.
