David de Gea’s spot as the Spanish national team’s number one goalkeeper is not under threat, according to manager Luis Enrique.
The Manchester United man made a number of mistakes playing for his country in the build-up and during the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Kepa Arrizabalaga has made a good start to his career in English football after Chelsea broke the transfer record for a goalkeeper to bring him to the Premier League.
Some have suggested that Spain boss Enrique should make a change in his side.
“I don’t know what’s going to happen in the future but that’s a position I haven’t had any doubts about,” Enrique said. “Never.”
It is a comprehensive backing of De Gea and his place as number one. Kepa himself has claimed he now feels mature enough to compete with De Gea for that spot.
Despite a couple of mistakes for his national team, De Gea remains one of the finest goalkeepers in the world. His only challengers are arguably Manuel Neuer of Bayern Munich and Germany and possibly Jan Oblak of Atlético Madrid.
It’s good to hear De Gea has the backing of Enrique to ensure that United’s most important player doesn’t feel a need to leave to make an impression in order to regain his spot.
