Former-Chelsea Ladies player Eni Aluko has described Mourinho as a split personality and revealed how the Manchester United manager changes when under pressure.
The Portuguese manager came into English football with a bang when he declared himself, in the most charmingly arrogant way possible, the ‘Special One’ upon joining Chelsea.
He crossed paths with Aluko while in his second stint at the London club. Mourinho has lost his charm somewhat over the years and now often represents a grumpy middle-aged man.
Aluko explained how Mourinho becomes a different character when he starts to lose matches, as Chelsea fans saw in his third season at the club when he treated Eva Caneiro, the club doctor, with complete disrespect.
United fans could see it if the pressure continues to build.
“When things are going well for José and people are saying nice things about him he becomes the most likeable guy in the room,” Aluko wrote in The Guardian.
“But when the pressure is on and things are starting to go badly, a completely different person comes across and he resorts to reminding everyone of his past success in a bid to deflect from current failures.
“Or perhaps, to put it more accurately, to remind everyone how great he once was.”
“During his time as a manager, insecurity has led to some real Jekyll and Hyde behaviour. Now it’s the turn of those at Manchester United to experience it.”
However, Aluko also backed Mourinho to weather the storm at Man United, something he has failed to do at any club in the past.
The Mourinho ‘third season syndrome’ has struck him on a number of occasions and it’s rare for the Portuguese to leave a club without leaving a mess behind.
“I think the club should stick with him,” Aluko continued. “Mourinho can show, for perhaps the first time in his career, he is the type of manager who can withstand a stormy period.”
If Mourinho can weather the storm, it may mean a certain few players leave the club. French duo Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba both have a frosty relationship with Mourinho and may choose to leave if he stays.
