Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has backed Marcus Rashford to keep improving at Manchester United after the youngster scored against Spain on Saturday.
The 20-year-old claimed his fourth international goal from a superb arcing low cross from Luke Shaw to put Gareth Southgate’s side into the lead.
Spain snatched two goals before half time and Rashford had a pair of glorious chances to bring England level, only to find himself foiled both times by the brilliance of David de Gea.
Speaking after the game, Henderson acknowledged that the ‘talented’ Man United youngster still had room to improve.
“We all know how talented Marcus is,” he said.
“His was a great finish. He had another one or two chances that maybe he would have liked to have scored but I thought he looked sharp.
“He was lively and he’s always a threat on the counter-attack. He’s a fantastic young player so he just needs to keep learning, keep improving. He’s a big part of our team.”
It is easy to sometimes forget that Rashford is only two full seasons deep into his playing career. He does, after all, already have three trophies to his name, four finals he has played in, two major international tournaments under his belt, one World Cup penalty shootout he has scored in, goals against Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool, and 126 appearances for his boyhood club.
Most footballers don’t achieve that in their whole career. Rashford has done all of that before even reaching the cusp of manhood. That is why he was leading the line for England against Spain and scoring over the weekend.
But we must never forget that a long career still lies ahead for him. What he has done as a 20-year-old is outstanding, but that should not render us oblivious to the notion that he is, in fact, still a kid.
