Anthony Martial has become a target for Serie A champions Juventus who want to sign the Frenchman on a free transfer.
Calciomercato suggest that the Italian side will be willing to wait for Martial to run his contract down before making a move and completing yet another high-profile free transfer, after the deal for Emre Can from Liverpool this summer.
22-year-old Martial is out of favour at Manchester United and appears to have a frosty relationship with manager Jose Mourinho after struggling for games under the Portuguese in the last two seasons.
He’s started just one game this season, in a 3-2 loss at the Amex Stadium against Brighton & Hove Albion. His performance in that fixture saw him dropped for the following match against Tottenham Hotspur and Martial did not feature once more in the Reds’ comfortable 2-0 away win vs Burnley.
Martial’s first season at Old Trafford saw him top the club’s goalscoring charts with 17 strikes as Louis van Gaal’s leading man. That came after a £36 million move from AS Monaco. Under huge pressure, Martial delivered.
The arrival of Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the summer of 2016 hampered Martial’s chances of starting as a lone striker, and the number 9 was taken off him by Ibrahimovic. The next year, Romelu Lukaku was signed from Everton for at least £75 million.
Martial’s chances have been limited on occasion, but his performances have been inconsistent and unimpressive.
Despite that, his stats for the club remain excellent. He’s scored 36 goals in 137 appearances but has contributed more goals and assists per 90 minutes than any other United player over the last couple of years.
With a contract up in June 2019, Juventus could manage to steal Martial away from United for nothing, or very little in comparison to his value.
