Jose Mourinho has hailed young Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay for his performance in the club’s humiliating 3-1 defeat against West Ham United.
Even though McTominay was guilty of losing Felipe Anderson for the opening goal in the fifth minute of Saturday lunchtime’s game, Mourinho praised the Scot.
The midfielder was played on the right of a three-man defence by Mourinho in an odd move that completely backfired for the Man United manager, who saw his side look dismal throughout the game.
McTominay wasn’t the worst in a United shirt at the London Stadium, but quite why Mourinho has singled him out for praise when no player in ‘pink’ deserved anything but criticism is unknown.
“He was the best,” Mourinho said when asked about McTominay’s performance on BT Sport.
“He had a fantastic attitude. He’s aggressive, he’s brave and he has something that we thought was important for us which is quality on the ball.
“He knows how to play football, he is technically good, he can bring the ball into offensive areas. I’m really happy with the job the kid did.”
It’s positive that Mourinho is giving some credit to young academy graduates at United. But it feels as if he’s saying such comments for other reasons.
The attitude at United stinks of selfishness, from players to manager to the board.
