John Terry has urged Manchester United’s players to turn themselves into big personalities in the dressing room in order to impress manager Jose Mourinho.
The English centre-back played under Mourinho at Chelsea during both of the manager’s spells at the London club. As captain, he was trusted greatly by the now Man United boss and understands what Mourinho looks for in player perfectly.
Terry is concerned by the lack of big personalities in the United dressing room. Mourinho, like Sir Alex Ferguson did, requires players who make themselves heard, who challenge each other, and who give everything every day of the week.
Ferguson always challenged his players to make training matches harder than real matches so the genuine event would become easy.
“At every club he has had big characters and I’m not sure he has that at Manchester United at the moment. At Chelsea, he did,” Terry said, speaking to the Mail.
“Does he have the same now at United? You have to stand up and turn up at training every day and show him that you want to win at all costs. If you’ve got that, he’s 100 per cent on your side.”
At Chelsea, Mourinho built a spine that lasted years of Petr Cech, Terry, Frank Lampard and Dider Drogba. Complementing them were a mixture of rock-solid defensive players and more technical players.
United are lacking the Terry-esque player currently. Paul Pogba captained the Reds on the opening day of the season against Leicester City. He’s a fantastic player, but not vocal on the pitch and certainly not an example to follow given his recent words in the media.
Antonio Valencia is the club captain. He’s another quiet one. United need many more leaders, because when things are going badly on the pitch, which has been a lot for United in the last four seasons, someone has to step up and take the lead.
Terry, though, remains a backer of Mourinho and thinks his old boss will work things out at United, but not just yet, and not this season.
“I do think he’ll bring success to United,” Terry said, “but it needs patience. My top three for this season will be decided between City, Liverpool and Chelsea. That leaves United and Spurs fighting for fourth.”
