Paul Pogba
Amid widespread concerns over Pogba’s cryptic comments regarding his future, the Frenchman somewhat toiled in the rain against Germany, earning a rating of 5 from L’Equipe.
Used the ball relatively well, exhibiting his usual languid control, but his influence going forward or in the box was largely non-existent.
Nemanja Matic
The Serbian continued to work himself back to full fitness with a controlled, solid performance at the base of midfield in a cagey but largely dominant 0-1 win over Lithuania.
Romelu Lukaku
Only spent 45 minutes on the bench and hardly got a sight of the ball, but nonetheless opened the scoring with a calm, well-guided finished in Belgium’s 4-0 win over Scotland at Hampden Park.
Handed a chance to feature up front alongside Harry Kane and made his presence felt throughout, swiping home from an excellent Shaw cross in the first half and stretching the pitch.
He should have claimed more: a point blanc header was saved by De Gea, and he was profligate with a couple of shots in the second half after carving out some space in behind Spain’s back four. That said, the way in which he felt constantly involved and used his raw speed would have encouraged Gareth Southgate and Jose Mourinho.
Made his first England start since 2015 and exhibited the same drive on the left hand side which earned him a recall to the national team. Moved with urgency and precision, supplying a perfect low arcing cross to give Rashford a rudimentary finish in the first half.
He was, once again, one of the best players on the pitch, only to be felled by an unfortunate head injury, which thankfully has not turned out to be serious.
Produced some good moments in the second half, buzzing around the pitch and feeding the likes of Rashford and Harry Kane, but was largely frustrated as Spain kept the ball well and dictated most of the game.
Following a summer of intense criticism from back home, De Gea put in a performance which reminded everybody of exactly why he is regarded as the best keeper in the world.
His save from Rashford’s close range header was nothing short of phenomenal, reminiscent of the save he made from Luis Muriel at Sevilla in February, and he kept England out in the second period with a series of smart stops. There was some controversy at the end, with Danny Welbeck scoring in injury time after barging the ball out of De Gea’s hands, only for the referee to blow for a foul.
