Jose Mourinho has assembled a ‘great’ Manchester United side since arriving in July 2016, according to Derby County manager Frank Lampard.
The pair will face off in the League Cup on Tuesday night, with Mourinho having managed Lampard for many years in two spells at Chelsea.
Lampard has a great respect for Mourinho, and paid tribute to his former-boss while speaking ahead of Tuesday’s fixture at Old Trafford.
The ex-England midfielder, one of the highest scoring in his position in his time in the Premier League, told reporters ahead of the third-round clash that his Derby team “know what we’re coming up against.”
Lampard labelled Mourinho’s side as “a great Manchester United team that’s been put together.”
“The fact we’re on telly against one of the best teams in the Premier League is a challenge for us.
“It’s going to be a very tough ask.
“What we can’t do is go there and walk away and say we should’ve done this or that. We have to give everything and make sure it doesn’t pass you by.
“Whether we can win or not is a very tough order, but we need to have our fans coming away proud of the team.”
Lampard comes into the game shortly after his wife gave birth, and he revealed that he has spoken to Mourinho since and the Portuguese congratulated him.
“We’ve spoken in the last 24 hours to congratulate me but it was very brief but we talked family,” Lampard said.
“I learned a lot from him and I appreciate it.
“I’m looking forward to seeing him.”
