Former Man United superstar backs this player to come good

Ryan Giggs still believes Alexis Sanchez can become a successful player for Manchester United.

The Chilean has miserably failed to adapt to life at Old Trafford, managing just three goals since joining in the January transfer window.

His performance in the 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers prompted many supporters to even compare his time at Man United to Fernando Torres at Chelsea.

But Giggs, speaking on Sky Sports, was adamant that Sanchez will eventually realise his full potential at Old Trafford.

“I’m a big fan of Sanchez,” he said. “I was a big fan of his at Arsenal and sometimes it just takes players a bit longer to settle in – even though he’s a top player he just looks like he’s a bit short of confidence, but I’m sure he’ll come good as he’s a top goalscorer and a good player as well.”

“He can play anywhere across the front, he played on the right for Barcelona and up front in his better days for Arsenal. I’ve seen him just off the left the most for United so it just depends who he’s playing with and who they’re playing against.

“He can also play that No 10 role but I think the best performances I’ve seen from him at United are just coming off the left, but it’s just not quite happening for him at the moment.”

Sanchez is probably not quite the player he was during those early days at Arsenal, wearing the No.17 shirt rather than No.7, but he is still a lot better than what we are seeing at Old Trafford.

Under Arsene Wenger, who allowed his attacking players to roam more freely and pass with greater liquidity, he was averaging a goal every two games even when Arsenal were no longer a top four team.

What he has encountered at United is very different: less space to run freely, less touches in and around the box, forced to play as part of a unit and do a lot more running backwards than normal. Jose Mourinho’s attacking methods – or lack of them – are visibly restricting the Chilean and those around him.
