Ferguson wanted to sign this current Man City player in last season at Man United, reveals ex-coach

roer-Manchester United first team coach Rene Meulensteen has revealed that the cub would have targeted now-Manchester City player Ilkay Gundogan had Sir Alex Ferguson not retired.

Meulensteen worked under Ferguson for many years, and told the Evening Standard what would have happened at Man United had the Scot stayed for another season or two.

Of course, he retired in 2013 after winning his 13th English title with United and David Moyes replaced him, bringing in only one player in his first transfer window in Marouane Fellaini.

Meulensteen revealed that Gundogan and his then-Borussia Dortmund teammate Marcos Reus were both targets of Ferguson and United.

“If Fergie had carried on then we would have had the same squad. We would have added some more quality, probably some more energy,” the Dutchman said.

“We were looking at Gundogan from Dortmund and Reus at that time.

“We were looking at Gundogan – someone similar (to Scholes), who could keep ticking the ball over, thinks quick and has tempo.”

Ferguson never managed to replace Paul Scholes at United, despite clearly attempting to do so on a number of occasions. Scholes was forced to come out of retirement, instead.

It’s sad to think what could have happened with a young and talented United side had Ferguson left. Although some elements of the team were ageing in Wayne Rooney, Patrice Evra, Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, players like Danny Welbeck, Rafael da Silva, Phil Jones and David de Gea were all seen as having huge potential.

Only De Gea has reached that potential. In addition to those talents, Ferguson could have brought in players like Gundogan and Reus as well as others, with Robin van Persie still lethal up front.
