Manchester United will decide the future of up to ten players in the next few months as their contracts run out at the club.
A number of first team regulars will be out of contract in the summer, and the club will make a decision on whether to automatically extend their deals or offer new ones in the coming months, according to the Manchester Evening News.
The majority of those in question could have their deals extended by a year if United so choose. In their contracts exists a one-year contract extension trigger which the club decide when to use, if at all.
Goalkeeper David De Gea is the biggest name in the list of players who have time running out on their deals. However, defenders Antonio Valencia, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling who have all been at the club for some years now are also on that list.
So too is Matteo Darmian, signed by Louis van Gaal from Torino in 2015, midfielder Andreas Pereira and striker James Wilson, who won his debut under Ryan Giggs when the Welshman was temporary manager but has ever managed to properly penetrate the United first team side.
The MEN imply that it’s likely United will trigger that automatic extension in the name of financial interests. They followed such a path with Sam Johnstone and Daley Blind last season, extending their contracts by a year before selling them in the summer.
Luke Shaw, Ashley Young and Juan Mata are three players whose contracts can no longer be automatically extended because that option was taken up by United last year. They may talk to rival clubs in the January transfer window unless they agree a new deal before then.
Importantly for United fans, De Gea remains expected to sign a new long-term deal at Old Trafford despite significant delays.
Anthony Martial, meanwhile, is still in negotiations with the club. The others with little time left on their deals have less certain futures at United.
