Man United can challenge for the title if they do this, claims Gary Neville

Gary Neville has backed Jose Mourinho to mount a title challenge this season with Manchester United if he can sign two players in the January transfer window.

Although the Reds are only four games into the new Premier League season, most have already written them off as title challengers after losing 50% of their games so far.

Neville believes Man United can still finish the season as champions, or make a good effort at it, if they remain close until the next transfer window, and then bring in some new faces in defence.

The majority of United’s problems thus far have been in defence, with individua errors largely at fault for two horrific results against Brighton & Hove Albion (3-2) and Tottenham Hotspur (3-0).

“[I’m] still hopeful that somehow, through siege mentality more than anything, they can mount some sort of challenge that really just disrupts people,” Neville explained to The Times.

“If they can stay in it until January and maybe get one or two defenders in, they may have a chance, but I doubt it. I think United will be third or fourth.

“Believe it or not I liked the Tottenham game, certainly the first 40 minutes. I watched Burnley and thought it was really good. I am hopeful they have turned a corner.”

There are some positives to United. They’re still waiting for Paul Pogba to hit his best form, and the same can be said for striker Romelu Lukaku.

Mourinho has only just welcomed back Nemanja Matic and Antonio Valencia back from injury. New signing Diogo Dalot is about to return, too.

Luke Shaw has started the season in fantastic form, which is the biggest positive. Fred, meanwhile, is settling down in reasonable fashion and should improve as the season progresses.

There is positives, then. But in defence, things look shaky. Central defence is too vulnerable an area to be weak in when looking to challenge for the title.

No January signings and it’s unlikely United will be anywhere close to City.
