Arsenal fans have been crying out for Lucas Torreira and Bernd Leno to get their first starts for the club and on Thursday night, that finally happened.
Both summer signings featured from the off against the Ukrainian side, Vorskla Poltava in the Gunners’ 4-2 win.
Now, head coach Unai Emery has revealed what he thought of the two players’ performances on Thursday.
“Well, Lucas is playing with his progress on the team and on our ideas, our performance with a passion and with a performance,” Emery said in his post-match press conference.
“Each minute he is playing, he is doing very well.
“And for Leno, it’s the first match also. I think that we conceded two goals but not for a mistake [from him].
“For him, it takes minutes for the game and confidence for continuing also because he will be continuing to play matches in the next week.”
Presumably, Emery is referring to Arsenal’s EFL Cup match against Brentford next week. Bernd Leno is presumably the club’s cup goalkeeper, for the time being at least. However, Lucas Torreira will be hoping to become a starting midfielder when the Premier League returns on Sunday.
