A late Daniel Sturridge wonder strike denied Chelsea their second win over Liverpool in the space of four days, as the sides played out an end to end attacking match at Stamford Bridge.
A frenetic first-half saw both sides create chances, with Liverpool arguably in the ascendancy on that front, but whilst Mohammed Salah spurned his chance to score Hazard needed just one invitation to give Chelsea the lead, latching onto a Mateo Kovacic through ball to fire past Allison from inside the area. Salah and Liverpool’s best opportunity came when the Egyptian rounded Kepa Arrizabalaga, only to see his shot cleared off the line by Antonio Rudiger.
In the second half, the game became fractured, with just fractions coming between a Liverpool equaliser and a two-goal Chelsea lead, Xherdan Shaqiri and Hazard both coming within inches of scoring for their respective sides. In reversing fortunes to Wednesday nights dramatic encounter, Liverpool were the team to pop up with a superb late goal, however, with Daniel Sturridge – who scored a similarly sublime goal against the Blues in the Carabao Cup, picking out the top right hand corner of the net sumptuously in the 89th minute of the game.
Liverpool have now surrendered their lead at the top of the Premier League table, but with Manchester City winning Chelsea have some catching up to do if they’re to challenge for the title.
