Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga has responded to calls for him to replace David de Gea as Spain’s number one, claiming he is ready to battle the Manchester United man for his spot.
Kepa became the most expensive goalkeeper in history this summer when he signed for the Blues from Athletic Bilbao in a deal worth £71.6million, following Thibaut Courtois’ move to Real Madrid.
Although only several games into his Chelsea tenure, the 23-year old has impressed under new boss Maurizio Sarri, having kept two clean sheets in Chelsea’s 100% winning start to the season.
As a result, some have called on Spain to hand Kepa the starting jersey for their upcoming Nations League games against England and Croatia, especially given De Gea’s disappointing World Cup campaign.
The United ‘keeper made several costly errors in Russia this summer, rather uncharacteristically, prompting calls to see him replaced as first-choice.
And responding to the calls, Kepa claims he wants the spot and is willing to fight for it, telling AS:
It is a question for the coach.
What I will do is work, although it is clear we all want to play.
The coach will decide what is best for the team, and in training I will try to work hard.
When asked for his thoughts on the criticism De Gea has received, Kepa continued:
I try to separate myself from that. We wanted to get as far as possible in the World Cup and it did not work out like that.
With De Gea we have a goalkeeper who perfectly covers the goal. I do not pay attention to the polls or what people say, I try to isolate myself and focus on myself.
The coach will decide his selection on what is best for the team – he makes the final decision and will accept whatever it is, always in good harmony.
