Former Manchester United captain Bryan Robson believes Alexis Sanchez will soon excel under Jose Mourinho.
The Chilean arrived in January and struggled to make a notable immediate impact under Jose Mourinho, managing just three goals.
But Sanchez’s latest performance against Burnley, during which he took up excellent positions with the ball and claimed an assist, was a clear sign of him acclimatising to Man United’s attacking movements.
And Robson, speaking earlier this week, has given Sanchez the seal of approval, insisting his summer off will help him perform more consistently this season.
“Sanchez is a top-class player,” he said. “But we haven’t seen the best of him at Manchester United so far.”
“But I’m sure he’ll get to the top of his game. This summer was the first summer he’s had off for several years, and that should do him good.
“Sometimes, though, when you have a free summer and a fair few weeks off, it can take a little bit more time to come back really sharp and to get into the season. These first few games of the season are maybe just what he needs to sharpen him up and then hopefully we’ll see the best of him for the rest of the season.”
The 29-year-old has slightly dropped off since his early days at Arsenal – back when he wore the No.17 shirt – in terms of ability and execution. A slight dip as he heads into his thirties is normal.
But that insatiable drive and tempo to his play is very much still there. That performance in the FA Cup semi-final, for example, was a Jose Mourinho dream.
And as Sanchez gets up to full speed this season – he is still recovering from a knock which left him out of the Tottenham Hotspur clash – supporters will no doubt start to see a player whose function in this team is clear.
