Neville believes Woodward shouldn't have given Mourinho contract extension

Manchester United legend Gary Neville believes Ed Woodward shouldn’t have given Jose Mourinho a contract extension last season.

There’s been a lot of discussion on who’s to blame following the club’s shock loss to Brighton with the manager, players and even board at fault.

Following United’s impressive start to the campaign last season, Mourinho was handed a contract extension in January as a show of faith despite still having a while left on his original contract.

Neville believes Woodward’s doubting of the Portuguese boss is hurting the club and that it’s not the right time to do so.

Jose was publicly disappointed with the lack of backing he received in the summer transfer window and the relationship between the two is clearly in poor shape.

According to Manchester Evening News, Gary said: “If Ed Woodward was going to doubt Jose Mourinho, the time to doubt him was at the point whereby he should have said ‘I’m not going to give you a new contract’ last January.

“The minute that he [Woodward] gave Jose Mourinho a contract extension, which some would say was unnecessary part way through a season, but believing in a manager, showing the faith, he had to then buy him the centre-backs.”

If Ed had decided to doubt Jose then it would’ve made more sense to get rid of him over the summer than to half-support him.

The former Chelsea manager needs to be either fully supported or gotten rid of so the club can move on and focus on more important things.

There’s been far too many distractions at Manchester United already and the season has only just begun.

Talk over the manager’s future, over whether Paul Pogba or Anthony Martial will remain and over the summer transfer window is not helping matters on the pitch.
