Senior figures at Manchester United are conscious of there being a problem with Jose Mourinho but believe in Ed Woodward to fix the situation, according to reports.
Tension begun in earnest following defeat in the FA Cup final, which saw Man United fail to offer attacking precision, and swelled further during a miserable pre-season where Mourinho became growingly frustrated at a lack of signings.
And the club’s first defeat of the season against Brighton and Hove Albion last Sunday – a truly awful performance – has only intensified scrutiny on the 55-year-old’s position at Old Trafford.
According to the Daily Mail‘s Mike Keegan, senior figures at the club are aware of a problem under Mourinho but back Woodward to rectify the situation.
This obviously does not mean any imminent transfers. United’s window effectively ended with the signing of Fred, which was confirmed in June.
Woodward’s efforts to improve the club’s situation have been more all-encompassing than that. For instance, the club has undertaken a considerable overhaul of the scouting department, alongside making efforts to improve the academy’s infrastructure.
There have also been steps made towards appointing either a director of football or technical director in order to smoothen the bridge between board and manager, which was clearly a problem over the summer.
Woodward is focusing on a number of things, then. And they should be beneficial in the long term. But perhaps he could be accused of annoying the elephant in the room that is the team’s lack of direction under the current leadership.
