Jose Mourinho has made it clear that he will continue to give younger players a chance to impress at Manchester United this season.
The 54-year-old handed Scott McTominay his first ever Champions League start for Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Benfica back in October.
And he has continued to give opportunities to Axel Tuanzebe, who made his Champions League debut against CSKA Moscow on Tuesday.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of the Manchester derby, Mourinho made it clear that he trusted in the youth players at his disposal.
“Sometimes I don’t play them all because I have respect for the older players, that are professionals,” he said.
“But in terms of their qualities they are ready to play so I played them on Tuesday. I played Scott against Benfica before we had qualified, I have faith in them.”
The 54-year-old may also welcome Timothy Fosu-Mensah, who has been on loan at Crystal Palace this season, back into the fold amid reports suggesting Roy Hodgson would be open to terminating his current deal in order to make way for striker Danny Ings.
Chances will be difficult to come by for both McTominay and Tuanzebe this season but they have shown over the past year an admirable level of composure in the first team, and supporters will hope that Mourinho continues to give the pair minutes when more senior players could do with a rest as the business end of the campaign approaches.
