Pundit: Man United are becoming a laughing stock this season

Paul Ince has branded Manchester United as the laughing stock of the Premier League following their defeat to Brigthon and Hove Albion.

Man United’s pre-season tour was marred by reported conflict between Jose Mourinho and Paul Pogba along with Jose Mourinho growing frustrated at the club’s lack of transfer activity.

Their first game, a 2-1 win over Leicester City, restored some calm, but Sunday’s 3-2 defeat to Brighton was sent supporter and pundits into overdrive.

Speaking this week, Ince, who recently called Pogba a “nightmare”, noted the situation at Old Trafford was becoming laughable.

“Other clubs and fans are having a field day at the minute, seeing what is happening at Man United,” he said. “They’re becoming a laughing stock and falling behind.”

“They finished second last season, and will probably make the top four this year, but is that what they should be striving for? No.

“Realistically, their goal should be to win the Premier League. But they just cannot compete with Manchester City or Liverpool at the minute.”

This is the impact a defeat can have at United. Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea all dutifully won their games over the weekend, and seem to be moving along nicely, shaping up well for the long haul which lies ahead.

At Old Trafford, on the other hand, there is a real feeling of chaos. The defeat to Brighton unleashed concerns and frustrations which first erupted properly following Sevilla, that have now swelled into something truly rotten and pervasive.

The only thing Mourinho and United can do to turn the tide is pick up some results. Monday’s clash with Spurs cannot come soon enough.
