Luke Shaw has expressed his delight after scoring the winning goal as Manchester United defeated a dangerous Leicester City side 2-1 in the 2018-19 Premier League curtain-raiser at Old Trafford.
Not only was it the deciding goal on a huge night for Man United following the disappointment of the summer transfer window, but it was also Shaw’s first of his career and he hasn’t played down his delight one bit.
The 23-year-old played one of his best games in a United shirt which earnt him the official Man of the Match award, and he described scoring in front of the Stretford End as the “best feeling” in his promising career to date.
Featuring on Sky Sports after full-time, Shaw said: “It was my first goal and that is all that was important, it doesn’t matter how I scored.
“I was meant to come inside and I managed to get in front of him [his marker] and put it in. It’s the best feeling I have had in my career.
“I have worked really hard over the pre-season and I had a lot of time to reflect, and work on what I needed to. Even tonight, I know I can be better and that is what I want to keep showing the manager.”
Whilst Ashley Young continues to return to full fitness following his impressive 2018 World Cup exploits in Russia over the summer, the left-back position is Shaw’s for the taking.
However, Young seems to be Jose Mourinho’s preferred option so he’ll certainly have a fight for a place in the position on his hands once the 33-year-old is back in the fold.
One thing is for sure though, he wouldn’t have wished for a better start to the campaign.
