Jose Mourinho has admitted that every match in the Premier League will be tough for Manchester United this season because of the amount of money spent by clubs during the summer transfer window.
Man United got their campaign off to a great start by beating a dangerous Leicester City side 2-1 at Old Trafford, with Paul Pogba scoring a third-minute penalty and Luke Shaw bagging his first career goal late on.
There were plenty of stand-out performers for United but Leicester were the better team in spells and proved that no game is going to be an easy ride throughout the 2018-19 campaign.
Speaking to Sky Sports after full-time, a joyous Mourinho explained how he thought the top-flight will be a much tougher league to play in this term.
“Obviously, it’s important to win and play well. I think we played well in periods and we played against a good team that invests more than us.
“They spent more money than us so I think in the Premier League, we must get used to teams who have players of the same quality that we have. Forget the name, forget the history, forget the shirt, every team is a good team and every match is difficult.”
Next up for United is a trip to the seaside, or the AMEX Stadium where Brighton & Hove Albion will be looking to once again defeat Mourinho’s side on the south coast.
There were plenty of positives to take from the curtain-raiser though and the squad should be brimming with confidence come next Sunday.
