<--Article Start-->Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof has pledged his allegiance with England for the remainder of the 2018 World Cup because of his ‘friends’ representing the country.
England beat Lindelof’s Sweden 2-0 in the quarter-finals on Saturday, as Harry Maguire and Dele Alli headed Gareth Southgate’s men into a first World Cup semi-final in 28 years.
Lindelof has been humble in defeat though, and has shown his support for his Man United team-mates as they go on to face Croatia on Wednesday night in Moscow for a place in the final.
Speaking ahead of that clash, Lindelof told reporters: “My United teammates? I just spoke with them you know and they gave me a hug and I congratulated them on the win and wished them good luck.
“I have wished them all the best and I will be cheering for England to win it now because they are my friends.”
United have four representatives playing for England in the summer tournament – Phil Jones, Ashley Young, Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford – with Young and Lingard playing pivotal roles in the nation’s success so far.
Lindelof also had a very solid campaign, being in a defence which conceded in just two of the five games played which will hopefully give him confidence ahead of the 2018-19 season.
The 23-year-old centre-back struggled for game time in his first season in England under Jose Mourinho, but is viewed as a talented player for the future more than anything right now.
It’ll be interesting to see what role Lindelof plays next term.
