Paul Scholes has admitted that Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale made him realise it was ‘game over’ for his playing career.
Scholes spent his whole career at Manchester United before retiring in 2011 after 20 years in the club’s ranks, only to come out of retirement and help Sir Alex Ferguson win a 13th Premier League title in the 2012-13 season.
The midfield maestro never quite looked as sharp as he did before his initial retirement during that brief spell though, and he’s opened up about the moment he realised it was the right time to hang up his boots for good.
Speaking to Richard Keys on beIN Sports as a 2018 World Cup pundit, Scholes said: “I think the mistake I did make – I played for the rest of that season – I shouldn’t have gone on again. The season after that, I was done then.
“I remember playing a game against Tottenham in the third or fourth game. I played alright, but I remember Gareth Bale running at me and I thought, ‘that’s game over’. I was even too slow to kick him. That was the problem.”
Man United have been long-term admirers of Bale and Jose Mourinho is thought to be interested in bringing him to Old Trafford this summer to boost his attacking options.
A player of Scholes’ past quality wouldn’t go a miss either, though!
