Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has confirmed Andreas Pereira will feature for the first team next season though he believes it won’t be as Michael Carrick‘s successor.
The Englishman hung up his boots at the end of last season but is still working for the club as part of the Portuguese’s coaching staff.
Carrick’s retirement meant, for many fans, that a successor would have to be brought in as there’s no one similar to him other than Nemanja Matic.
No player has been signed that fits that mould but some United supporters believed Pereira can eventually fill that role, especially as he’s featured in defensive midfield in pre-season.
Unfortunately Mourinho doesn’t feel the same way, which is fine as long as it means someone is brought who’s capable in the position.
According to Manchester Evening News, Jose said: “There is no Michael Carrick successor. Fred is a technical player and having him there in the squad, around physical people, we think a player like Fred and Andreas Pereira are more technical.
“Good in short spaces, connects with the attacking players.”
Andreas is better as a more attacking midfielder either way and is far suited to being a back-up to Paul Pogba than to Matic.
Whether the Belgian is willing to bide his time doing so or not is yet to be seen but it doesn’t read well since he left to Valencia for that reason.
His loan spell away last season was brought about because he wasn’t reassured he’d be a starter for the Red Devils.
