Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has backed Diogo Dalot for success after labelling him the best right-back in European football in his age group.
Though the youngster was a relative unknown to most fans before completing his move, it clear the Portuguese manager was keeping an eye on him.
Dalot signed this summer from Porto, a club Mourinho is said to still have close ties with and it clearly worked in his favour.
The former Real Madrid manager is said to have brought the 19 year old in to act as Antonio Valencia‘s heir.
The Ecuadorian is definitely in the twilight of his career and it makes sense to have invested in young potential such as Dalot.
Mourinho on Dalot: “We bought a fantastic player, young, 19 years old, but I think probably the best right back at that age in European football. He had a surgery last May, he’s recovering from that. One more reason to take care of Antonio.” #mufc [ESPN]

It’s unfortunate Diogo has joined the Red Devils carrying an injury as he could’ve used the pre-season tour to gel with his new teammates.
Getting minutes under his belt in a relaxed atmosphere would’ve done him well in his bid to overtake Valencia as Jose’s first choice right-back.
Nonetheless, there’s hope he can recover and show he won’t be as injury prone as the rest of Manchester United’s backline.
Antonio is unlikely to give up his spot in the first team easily which will certainly make the battle interesting.
