Manchester United’s board remains fully committed to backing Jose Mourinho with funds to improve his squad this summer, according to the Guardian.
The 55-year-old has voiced frustration at the club’s failure to deliver any further high profile signings following the early capture of Diogo Dalot and Fred.
He has expressed the need for two more signings but noted following defeat to Liverpool in Michigan that he only expected one new name to arrive before the transfer window shuts on August 9.
According to the Guardian‘s Jamie Jackson, the club’s board is sympathetic to Mourinho’s frustration and have told him finances are available for a fourth transfer of the summer at least without needing to send a player – Marcos Rojo, for example – in the other direction.
There is a consensus emerging among supporters suggesting that the board, seemingly interested in hitting financial targets instead of genuinely overhauling the squad, is more than happy with a team which can qualify for the top four rather than compete for the title.
United’s transfer window certainly gives credence to this notion. But no club – especially one of United’s stature – deliberately limits itself in that way.
Ambition in the transfer market is not a weak point for Ed Woodward, who has invested over half a billion in this squad since Mourinho’s arrival. The problem with this transfer window, it seems, has been one of execution. There are a big 11 days ahead.
