Former Manchester United captain Bryan Robson has spoken effusively of Tahith Chong’s substitute appearance against Club America on Thursday night.
The teenager earned a place on the tour following a superb campaign for the Under 18s under Kieran McKenna last season.
And he was the standout name in Arizona with a confident, powerful attacking display crowned by a sumptuous cross from which Juan Mata scored an equaliser.
Speaking on MUTV after the game, Robson was delighted with the way Chong conducted himself against the Mexican side.
“I thought Chong looked really bright and sharp about his game when he came on,” he said.
“He put a great ball in when Juan scored. There were some nice touches, some nice speed and some good energy levels when he came on. He impressed when he came on the pitch.”
Any football fan, whether they grew up in the 1950s or late 2000s, adores the sight of a player bursting forward with the ball, eating up that grass and leaving opponents on the floor. There is a kind of aesthetic quality to it, isn’t there?
For United fans, however, it goes much deeper than that. Seeing players like Chong – whose raw instinct and fearlessness is yet to be corrupted by the tactical slew of playing at the top – bomb forward like that reminds us of what this club used to represent: audacity, excitement, unpredictability, glorious arrogance.
He is a player who will get bums off seats. He is a player who slots in perfectly at a club which values attacking vitality. And he is a player who, no doubt, Mourinho needs to keep on the loop.
