Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Antonio Valencia, Chris Smalling, Eric Bailly and Luke Shaw will ‘probably’ be the ones who start the season against Leicester City on August 10.
Manchester United have only made one defensive signing this summer in the form of Diogo Dalot, who won’t be available until September.
The aforementioned quartet featured in the 1-1 draw with Club America last night with Ashley Young, Phil Jones, Victor Lindelof and Marcos Rojo all on holiday.
Speaking to MUTV before the game, Mourinho noted how the defence Man United fans saw would be the one which started against Leicester in three weeks’ time.
“Valencia, Smalling, Bailly and Shaw, they are probably the ones to start the season,” he said.
This may well be a thinly veiled challenge to Ed Woodward, who was at the game last night, to deliver on Mourinho’s wish to bring in Alex Sandro and Toby Alderweireld before the window shuts – now possible after the sale of Daley Blind and impending departure of Matteo Darmian.
Then again, he is most likely planning for the worse. His options ahead of the new campaign and wafer thin but can count on these four defenders to be in good shape in time for the opening Premier League game of the season.
