Real Madrid forward Marco Asensio has ruled out the prospect of leaving the Bernabeu any time soon.
The Spaniard broke into the Real side towards the back-end of last season and attracted the attention of various clubs after claiming a series of important goals for Los Blancos – including one in the Champions League semi-final.
He has been a regular feature under Zinedine Zidane this season, making 24 appearances in total and claiming six goals.
And Asensio, speaking to Club del Deportista, made it clear that he wanted to remain loyal to Zidane when asked about a potential move away.
“It is difficult to manage a squad as good as our one, but Zidane knows he can count on me,” he said.
“I work hard every day to earn more minutes, but I am aware of where I am. I am at the best club in the world and I am happy at Real Madrid.”
Madrid have reportedly planned to set Asensio’s release clause at €300m – a truly absurd notion that surely goes against some rule somewhere. Not that it matters when it comes to Florentino Perez.
The club’s hierarchy clearly sees him as more than just a useful injection of energy and precision in the final third; they want him to be a poster boy for the next generation of Madrid players as the likes of Sergio Ramos, Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo start to approach the twilight stages of their careers.
Ed Woodward is probably more likely to discover a new element than prizing a player of such potential brilliance from Real’s grasp.
