Jose Mourinho has confirmed that new signing Diogo Dalot will not appear for Manchester United until September.
The 19-year-old, who only has eight senior caps to his name, joined Man United from Porto for a fee of £17.4m back in June.
He has travelled with the squad for their pre-season tour of the United States but a knee injury picked up in May, which required a minor operation, has consigned him to training on his own.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Mourinho confirmed Dalot would not play for United until September.
“Dalot is injured; we knew that but we didn’t want to lose him because of that,” he said.
“He is recovering really well. We think he can start training with the team when we go back to England. He will not be ready for the start of the season but we think he’ll be ready for September.”
Dalot is yet to reach double figures for senior appearances and was injured when Mourinho made him his first signing of the summer. On first glance this may seem like a tenuous piece of business, and it could be: an inexperienced teenager with a similar number of caps as Axel Tuanzebe is not going to solve the club’s fully fledged full-back crisis even in the slightest.
Then again, Mourinho is extremely careful with his signings, only bringing in profiles who he believes can align with the way he wants to work. That he has brought in this relatively unknown Portuguese teenager suggests he has seen something very special in him.
His debut will most likely come away to Watford on September 15.
