Manchester United have had a €50m bid for AC Milan defender Alessia Romangnoli rejected but could secure his signature with a higher offer, according to reports from Italy.
Jose Mourinho has been on the lookout for central defenders this summer, launching a failed bid to sign Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld earlier in the window.
Romagnoli has turned the head of several European suitors after another solid season at the San Siro, forming an impressive partnership with Leonardo Bonucci – another Man United target.
And according to Italian media outlet Corriere dello Sport, United have been told that €50m for Romangnoli – who at the age of just 23 has over 100 appearances for Milan – is not enough.
But the Rossoneri would not be completely averse to selling Romangnoli. They have recently been struck with a one-year ban from playing in Europe for breaching FFP rules and may be forced to sell some of their best players to make ends meet over the summer.
And Romangoli is too good to be languishing in mid-table obscurity in Serie A: a calm, assured presence on the ball, not afraid to pass into midfield, athletic and strong, an emboldening force for Milan at both ends of the pitch.
Where he would fit in amid the current setup at United, however, with five centre backs already fighting for places, remains to be seen.
