Manchester United have been given the green light to move for Lazio’s Sergej Milinkovic-Savic after Juventus pulled out of the race to sign the midfielder, according to reports in Italy.
The club views Milinkovic-Savic, who enjoyed a remarkable 2017/18 campaign, as the ideal fit for their quest to find a young box-to-box midfielder.
His £100m valuation, however, is considered too high by Man United, and Juventus have emerged as the favourites to sign him, with Milinkovic-Savic himself admitting he was open to the prospect.
But according to Italian media outlet Tuttosport, Juventus have backed away from any deal after being told they would have to shell out around €150m to sign the Serbia midfielder this summer, giving United the chance to swoop in.
Marouane Fellaini‘s contract extension, combined with a greater need to reinforce positions in defence, probably precludes United from shelling out such a large sum for Milinkovic-Savic. But that doesn’t mean all hope is lost.
Milinkovic-Savic may push for a move away and, with both United and Juventus balking at his price, Lazio may facilitate the process by lowering his fee. The Serie A side, in that case, would surely prefer to sell to anyone aside from the predominant champions of Italy, who have made a habit in recent years of pinching the best players from the division.
