Former England star Rio Ferdinand has attempted to dissect just why Victor Lindelof has impressed for Sweden in a way he’s been unable to at Manchester United.
The former Benfica man had been one of the stars of the World Cup before his nation was knocked out of the tournament by the Three Lions in the quarter-finals.
Lindelof was solid at the back for his team, showing his great tackling, pace and ability on the ball multiple times with even United fans excited by his potential.
The Swede had a turbulent debut season, almost immediately proving that he would need time to adjust to his surroundings but did grow in stature towards the end of the campaign.
Ferdinand claims there’s a belief in Victor in his international camp that he simply doesn’t have at Old Trafford for one reason or the other.
According to Manchester Evening News, Rio said to the BBC: “He’s [Lindelof] been immense for them in this tournament. He’s 23 years old, he’s young, he came to Man United with a big, big price tag from Benfica.
“He didn’t seem to have the confidence in a Man United shirt that I’ve seen in a Sweden shirt. The manager, the staff, the players in that team look like they believe in this boy.
“It doesn’t seem he has that at the moment at Manchester United and that’s what’s affected him.”
There’s plenty of hope that Lindelof can carry the momentum of his World Cup performances into next season so that he and Eric Bailly can finally partner up together.
Both centre-backs were brought in by Jose Mourinho himself and aren’t products of a previous manager’s era so it’s clear he hoped they would be the future of United’s backline.
