Manchester United have approached Sevilla about the prospect of signing centre-back Clement Lenglet this summer, according to reports in France.
Jose Mourinho is looking to revamp his defence at Old Trafford and is believed to be keen on signing a right, left and centre-back before the 2018-19 season kicks off.
Promising FC Porto right-back Diogo Dalot is expected to complete a move to Man United this week and Juventus’ Alex Sandro is Mourinho’s preference for a new first-choice left-back.
Now L’Equipe report that United have stepped up their interest in Lenglet and have made a concrete approach for the Frenchman’s services.
The 22-year-old’s performances as Sevilla knocked United out of last season’s Champions League Round of 16 are what put him on Mourinho’s radar as a long-term partner for Eric Bailly – the Portuguese boss even admitted after the shock 2-1 second leg defeat that many of Sevilla’s players would improve his team.
Lenglet only joined the Spanish side in January 2017 from Nancy for €5m but has an attractive €35m (£30.7m) release clause in his current contract that has attracted notable suitors.
La Liga champions Barcelona are thought to be huge favourites to sign the defender during the transfer window, but United’s reported approach could sway the player’s mind.
However, this news comes right out of the blue, is from an on-and-off source, and contradicts reports that Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld is the no. 1 target in that position, so don’t expect Lenglet to be wearing a United shirt anytime soon.
