A heavily deflected strike from substitute Eden Hazard was just about enough to see Chelsea through to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup on a bitterly cold Wednesday night against Eddie Howe’s high flying Bournemouth side.
A strong yet rotated Chelsea side were on the front foot straight away, with shots from Olivier Giroud and Ross Barkley drawing good saves from Artur Boruc. Bournemouth, however, were always a threat on the counter and protracted Chelsea target Callum Wilson shot wide before Lys Mousset tested Kept Arrizabalaga with a curling effort.
The second half was a similarly cagey affair and the introduction of Scottish winger Ryan Fraser added an extra dynamic to Bournemouth’s front line, pushing Chelsea back and causing them to become more a more defensive unit. As the clock ticked on it would be another substitute, this time for Chelsea, who’d grab the headlines as Belgium winger Eden Hazard steered Chelsea into the next round of the cup via a huge stroke of luck.
Chelsea will now take on London rivals Tottenham in the semi-finals after they beat Arsenal 2-0 at the Emirates.
