Pep Guardiola has confirmed that captain Vincent Kompany is a doubt to face Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The Belgian re-entered the fold under Guardiola to fill in for John Stones back in November, who will be out for another month at least.
He was expected to feature during the 2-1 defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday night but Eliaquim Mangala, Fernandinho and Oluwatosin Adarabioyo started as a back three instead.
And Guardiola, speaking after the game, noted that he wanted to see Kompany play in Ukraine but revealed that he picked up another knock that may keep him out of Sunday’s derby.
“Kompany didn’t feel good,” he said. “I wanted to make him play, but he didn’t feel good so it was an opportunity for the others [to] play.”
Fabian Delph, who has emerged as Man City’s first choice left-back in Benjamin Mendy’s absence, is also a doubt after vomiting prior to the defeat in Kharkiv and Danilo may have to fill in on Sunday after playing 90 minutes in mid-week.
Guardiola will most likely opt for the defensive duo of the excellent Nicolas Otamendi and the not-so-excellent Mangala on Saturday. Mourinho will want his side to pose an aerial challenge to the former whilst using the speed of Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial and Romelu Lukaku to unhinge the Frenchman.
